The Future of the Internet

Washington, D.C. -- January 10, 2005 -- A wide-ranging survey of technology leaders, scholars, industry officials, and analysts finds that most Internet experts expect attacks on the network infrastructure in the coming decade as the Internet becomes more embedded in everyday and commercial life.
Some 66 percent of the experts responding to a survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project and Elon University agreed with the following prediction: At least one devastating attack will occur in the next 10 years on the networked information infrastructure or the country’s power grid.

HearUsNow.org

This looks like a good thing -- sponsored by the Comsumer Reports people:

Consumers Union today unveiled a groundbreaking Web site that offers consumers the latest information, advice and developments in the media world -- from digital TV to Internet privacy to cell phone company mergers -- as well as a means to directly change the marketplace by harnessing the power of consumers.

Consumers Union's new site -- http://www.HearUsNow.org -- follows the organization's long tradition of promoting a fair and just marketplace by explaining to consumers the latest technology and developing policy, as well as providing insight into how those changes affect them as they communicate each day. The site provides consumer tips and advice on traditional phones, wireless service, the Internet and broadband, radio-TV-cable, and digital content.

Too Much Reality?

Jay Rosen ponders:

What I really wanted to say to the BBC guy was: There's too much reality rushing over us every day just now. And it's pushing me to the limits of my own vocabulary.

Can anyone help? Do you even know what I'm talking about? Hit the comment button and tell us: what connects the items on my list?

Here's his list. And here's my response!

This may well be oversimplification, but I'm thinking the thing that holds it all together is the ability of just about anyone to have their opinion heard by thousands of people every single day – for about the price per month of a single hard-copy book.

Not "enough" Women?

Scoble got a complaint from a woman who complained "not enough women" were invited to an event at Microsoft. I've encountered that kind of thing myself, and expect to encounter it again.

The Tech Article I'd Like to See...

I would've done this myself, but don't have access to enough of the information. Maybe this is even two articles.

What I'd like to see is a definitive piece on the various aggregators and a comparision of the number of blogs they include, features, etc. for purposes of making an informed decision when choosing a primary aggregator. There are a lot of different ways people use their aggregators, and while right now I get what I need from Bloglines, if my needs change, maybe there's something better for a different kind of purpose. I'd like to be able to easily and quickly figure this out.

When it comes to tracking a specific subject or news item, I'm running into some difficulty. So far, neither Feedster nor Technorati has given me results that actually relate to my query. So I'd like to see something that imstructs on the best way of using all this stuff with a minimum of frustration!

One Sure Way to Keep Down that Pesky Website Traffic

Came across this while looking up some news stories this AM:

Are you a cable subscriber who receives News 12?
Yes, I am a subscriber to: Cablevision
Comcast
Time Warner
No, I am not a subscriber

Click here to purchase a monthly or yearly subscription to the site.
Only $4.95 a month or $48 yearly.

So they want you to pay them to get their promotional messages -- this is, after all, what the website associated with a TV station is all about, isn't it????

Adbusters Sues Canadian Big3

From the Adbusters site:

On September 15, Adbusters launched legal action against four of Canada's biggest television broadcasters – CTV, CanWest Global, CBC and CHUM. With prominent civil rights lawyer Clayton Ruby as our lead counsel, we're fighting for the right to buy airtime for our advocacy TV messages, which broadcasters around the world have refused to air.

As they say further down on the page, if they are successful, this will change everything, though I'm not entirely sure at the moment if this is a good thing or not. I'm seeing it more as government increasing its power over broadcasters. I'll be on the lookout for something more from somebody who knows the intricacies of the issue.
